Website development continues to grow across industries and countries. Today’s world is heading towards super specialization, which demands designers to focus on their strengths.
There is a wide range of coding languages and each have pros and cons, some of them have become quite popular, which make them more demanded. A designer does not need to become a guru on HTML or CSS, but they do need to understand about the code that forms the basis of the web and the ones gaining relevance in the fields of interest. Here are some of the most popular coding languages:
- HTML (HyperText Markup Language)
There are different stages of coding between the design and a live website. The first step in the process usually is about mapping out the components of the site into HTML elements and writing out the basic HTML code.
Each component, known as element, is specified using tags. Text, images, animations each become an HTML element and each one is structured into a hierarchy called the DOM tree, which determine the order in which each element is both loaded and displayed.
- CSS (Cascading Style Sheets)
The styling information is usually stored separately from the HTML as CSS sheets so that developers can change one or other easily and without having to redo the entire code. CSS works really well for style and having this aspect separate works really well especially for large websites with multiple pages.
Each page no longer requires to have its own layout coded or the fonts defined, etc. Instead, all pages can use a common set of CSS style sheets to leverage a common layout, font set, and other characteristics.
- JavaScript
According to StackOverflow’s annual survey, JavaScript is the most popular language and it counts with 62.5% users.
This language lets you have dynamic, interactive elements on your web page. Most contact forms, changing image carousels, auto-suggest / auto-fill fields and the likes are all based on JavaScript.
JavaScript knowledge is useful for plenty of front-end frameworks such as React, Ember, Angular, Backbone and others. This means that JavaScript can run with high efficiency. In addition, three of the top four most popular framework for 2019 according to StackOverflow are JavaScript-based.
There are some tools including React Native or Apache Cordova that allow using JavaScript for mobile.
- Python
Python is a general-purpose language, present anywhere today. It is used by references in the online world like NASA or Google.
The code of Python is neat, readable and well-structured and it determines code execution. Besides, the language is equipped with quality machine learning and data analysis libraries like Sickit-learn and Pandas.
- Java
90% of the Fortune 500 companies use Java. Its powerful Java Virtual Machine (JVM) makes this programming language cross-platform compatible.
Even though Java is not the most ‘trendy’ language for now, it is still so heavily used that experts agree that it will remain relevant at least during the next decade.
- C++
This highly flexible and efficient language has remained in high demand due to its reliability, performance and the facilities to use it in a big variety of contexts.
Numerous large systems operate with C++ including Miracle, PayPal, Adobe and Oracle. C++ is ideal for developing desktop applications and for performance-intensive tasks.
